Telling Our Story
Tyco Recognized at Action Against Hunger Benefit Gala
On behalf of Tyco, Patrick Decker, president, Tyco Flow Control, accepted a 2011 Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award during a November benefit gala in New York City.
In response to the global water crisis, Tyco has partnered with Action Against Hunger to launch the Clean Water Access Initiative to provide safe drinking water and sanitation to impoverished communities threatened by malnutrition and water-borne diseases. Tyco has committed more than $2 million in resources over the next three years to enable Action Against Hunger to respond quickly to natural disasters and to build infrastructure providing reliable access to clean water.
“While individuals accept honors, teams earn them,” said Decker when presented with the award. “Teamwork is one of our company’s core values and defines not only who we are but how we operate. The Clean Water Access Initiative is truly a team effort and represents the collective work of a number of dedicated Tyco employees around the world.”
Since the partnership was announced in July, Tyco has provided emergency response grants supporting Action Against Hunger relief efforts in flood-inundated Pakistan and drought-stricken Kenya. The partnership also is currently undertaking a water project that will improve access to safe water for 40,000 people on the Indonesian island of Timor.
“On a daily basis, we see the power and possibilities of water,” said Decker. “Many companies can give cash to help provide access to clean water, but Tyco can do more. Tapping the expertise of talented engineers and business leaders, we are uniquely positioned to produce 60 kilometers of PE [polyethylene] pipes and send them to Indonesia.”
In closing his remarks, Decker stressed the power of partnership embodied by the Clean Water Access Initiative. “All of Tyco’s efforts would have far less potential impact if it were not for our partnership with Action Against Hunger,” Decker said. “We’ve been incredibly impressed by your team and your effectiveness in working within local communities to help them take the lead in securing their own water futures.”
Also recognized during the event were Dr. Hans Rosling, professor of international health at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Peter Ayii Kon, an Action Against Hunger staff member working in the Republic of South Sudan.
